Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972, and is an American rapper.  He has a half brother named Nathan.  Marshall Mathers’ father left when his son was just a few months old. Marshall and his mother moved a lot because his mother wasn’t able to stick with her jobs long enough.  In the meantime they move in with relatives. Because of this, Marshall frequently switches school. He’s always the new kid on school in mainly colored neighbourhoods.  As a result, he was bullied a lot, and beaten up by class mates.  One time he was beaten so badly that he was in a coma for 10 days. Eminem was called ‘’Mickey” by his family because of his big ears, something he didn’t like at all. At the age of 7, Marshall was obsessed with comic books. At that time he knew for sure he wanted to become a comic book artist.  He sketched a lot in his bedroom and signed his drawing with M&M, an abbreviation of Marshall Mathers. Later this is changed into his stage name Eminem.

At the age of 9 Marshall gets in touch with Hiphop via his uncle Ronnie. Marshall feels very lonely and has found his best buddy in his uncle. His uncle was a major Hiphop fan and gives him an audio cassette with the track ‘’Reckless’’ made by Ice-T. Eminem was fascinated by that song and starts to grow an interest in Hiphop. Later, his uncle gives him the album of N.W.A and Marshall starts to listen more and more to Hiphop music. Together with his uncle he records rap tracks.  He visited his uncle often and spends a lot of time with him. He starts to read dictionaries and he saves all the words he considers important in a box, that he showed in an interview with the TV show “60 minutes”.

On December 13, 1991, something terrible happens in the life of Marshall Mathers . He is called by his mother who tells him his uncle Ronnie has committed suicide. Marshall was devastated and so shocked that he didn’t attend the funeral. In an interview he said:  “He was just like my best friend. He was the only family that I had, that I was close to. ” Marshall locks himself into his bedroom and listens only to the tracks he got from his uncle. He stopped attending school after he kept back for a year 3 times in a row in highschool.

His career starts when he distributes his debut album “Soul Intent” for free at his first concert: there are only 500 copies in the world. His mother tries to sell his cassettes at gas stations. His first solo album, ‘’infinite’’, released in 1996, fails. He rewrites the lyrics and makes them a bit moodier. This takes on better, and he becomes known for his cartoon-like clips and because he is a white rapper, which was very special then. Dr. Dre happens to hear one of his demos and gets in contact with the rapper, assuming that he was a black rapper.

His second album, “The Slim Shady LP”, is a huge success and becomes a typical mainstream album. It got the platina status 3 times and was his ticket to worldwide fame.

On June 3, 2000, there was some turmoil around the rapper after Eminem pulled an unloaded gun when his wife Kim was kissing with an other man on a parking lot. He was sentenced for carrying a weapon and for abuse and got a suspended sentence of 2 years.

Eminem released a substantial number of albums over the years.  Het stands out for his strong sense of flow and the grief that can be heard in his songs. As an example, in the track “Cleaning Out My Closet” he reveils his anger towards his mother. He is considered the best or one of the best rappers of the world.
